How to Tell if You Have a Roof Leak

In your home, water should be contained to the shower, sinks, water heater, and bathtub. Unfortunately, sometimes water from outside sources can sneak its way into the house. There are a few tell-tale signs of a roof leak that all homeowners should be aware of.

How to Tell if You Have a Roof Leak

  • Strange Spots Appearing on Your Walls- If your walls have begun to accumulate yellow and brown patches, you almost certainly have a roof leak. These spots mean that water has made it through your damaged roof and has begun to seep through the walls, which can lead to a whole host of problems, including dangerous mold growth.
  • Drips and Leaky Light Fixtures- If you begin to see or even hear dripping water in your home, you should look out for a roof leak. Additionally, if you have a leak, the water will move along the path of least resistance, which will oftentimes result in it settling inside a light fixture. If you notice water accumulating in a light fixture, immediately turn it off to prevent electrical problems and contact a repairman.
  • Damaged Shingles Allow Water Seepage- When you notice the signs of a roof leak, you should inspect the problem at the source: your roof. If your shingles are damaged, or if any shingles are missing entirely, water can find its way into your home.

Don’t let a trickle of rainwater become a flood of structural problems and financial hardship. If you see any signs that your home has a roof leak, immediately contact a professional.
