As we start to see the last of the snow (hopefully!) and the days grow longer, spring is finally making its way. After our long winter, your home’s exterior might be showing signs of wear that weren’t there in the Fall. With flowers starting to bloom, freshening up your yard and home maintenance is probably on your to-do list. Now is the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and freshen up your home’s curb appeal from flowers and mulch to cleaning your siding and checking on your roof.

At Freedom Roofing, Windows & Siding LLC, we know how important it is to keep your home looking and functioning at its best. As we transition from Winter to Spring, we put together a list of things that should be prioritized for your home.

Home Maintenance Tips for Spring

  1. Spring Cleaning Your Yard
  2. We all know that now that the snow is gone, more things are visible in our yards and our homes. Be sure to pick up branches and sticks that may have fallen (your lawn mower will thank you!), rake up dead leaves that may have still been on the ground from Fall, and just pick up any other debris that looks messy.

  3. Inspecting Your Roof
  4. The winter weather can take a toll on your roof! Between holding the heavy snowfall and carrying the weight of ice dams, damage seems almost inevitable. Performing an inspection can lead to finding smaller issues before the Spring showers can take advantage of them. We don’t encourage anyone to get onto the roof of their home, so have a professional come out and perform a free roof inspection.

  5. Examining and Cleaning Your Siding and Exterior Walls
  6. With Spring comes pests, like ants, and they’re professionals at finding the openings in your siding to welcome themselves into your home. You can look for places where your siding may have contracted or expanded, or places where water may have gotten in and frozen to cause damage to your siding. Pressure washing a home’s exterior is an excellent way to clean up your siding coming out of Winter to help assist with improving the look of your home’s exterior.

  7. Cleaning and Inspecting Interior and Exterior Windows & Doors
  8. Has there been a spot on the outside of your window, but it’s been too cold to go outside and clean it? Have you been feeling drafts every time you walk past your windows? How about when you walk past your door? Now that the weather is changing, it’s a good time to inspect your windows and doors both inside and outside of your home. Some things to look for are moisture, cracks, and drafts. If you are noticing any of those signs, it’s a good idea to consider getting your windows replaced so that once Spring turns to Summer, you won’t need to worry about wasting money with your current inefficient windows.

  9. Cleaning out Gutters and Downspout
  10. Outside of your roof, your gutters may have received the most damage. After all, the ice dams had to hang somewhere, and they are heavy! It’s not uncommon for the weight of the snow and ice to pull a home’s gutters directly out of the fascia board. Sticks, leaves, and other debris may have also gotten into your gutters and downspouts, and that can lead to clogs and overflowing gutters. Overflowing gutters can be dangerous to your home’s siding and foundation and lead to larger, but avoidable problems!

  11. Washing Your Driveway and Walkways
  12. The fluctuation of temperatures, freezing water in small cracks, and salt can cause cracks in concrete or asphalt. It’s important to hose off your driveway to remove any excess salts and to fill any cracks you find before they expand into larger cracks. Edging your walkways can also be a good way to boost your home’s curb appeal.
